{"id":1864,"date":"2010-04-06T16:37:52","date_gmt":"2010-04-06T21:37:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.vineimages.ca\/?p=1864"},"modified":"2010-11-25T10:21:10","modified_gmt":"2010-11-25T15:21:10","slug":"the-pirate-ship-in-jordan-harbour-st-catharines-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.vineimages.ca\/?p=1864","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;The Pirate Ship&#8221; in Jordan Harbour, St. Catharines, ON"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some of you may have seen this ship before, it is only a few metres from the Queen Elizabeth Highway on the way to Niagara Falls.\u00a0 It was a\u00a0bit of a surprise when we saw it\u00a0for the first time. My kids like to call\u00a0it the the\u00a0Pirate Ship. It has\u00a0been in Jordan Harbour, at the Beacon Hotel marina, since 1997.\u00a0 The story has it that the ship was built in Lauzon, Quebec, 1914 and was originally used as a St. Lawrence River ferry. It was called Le Progress. In 1991 a wooden facade was built over the steel hull and the masts and crows nests were added to make her look like Jacques Cartier&#8217;s 1535 ship Le Grande Hermine. She was re-named Le Grande Hermine and used as a restaurant in Montreal. After a few moves and some unpaid dock-age fees, she was towed to her present location where she has been ever since. A fire in 2003 burned off all the wood finishing. On Easter weekend, a few of my girlfriends and I took our kids over to see it up close for the first time.
